A graduate of Berkely in CA, Maya Romanoff found inspiration working with textiles and dyes at Woodstock, and began experimenting with tie dye and resist dyeing textiles. Later that year, in 1969, The Maya Romanoff Company was incorporated, and in these early years Maya created a line of couture clothing and made pieces for celebrity clients including Roger Daltry and Elton John. From 1979 forward Maya brought his beauty to wall surfacing and introduced various collections that make up the line as we know it today.
Maya’s achievements over the years were extensive. Innovation and industry-wide recognition led to his being named a Trailblazer by The International Furnishings and Design Association and an Icon of Industry by NEWH. Currently, nine collections have been inducted into the permanent collections of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Maya passed away in 2014 after a 20-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Since that time his wife Joyce has taken the helm, along with Maya & Joyce’s second generation, to steer the company into the future.
